Standard VPN protocols like WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2 work great almost everywhere. But some governments run deep packet inspection, network equipment that doesn't just block known VPN server addresses, it actively examines the shape and pattern of your traffic and recognizes "this looks like a VPN connection," then blocks it outright, even on a server nobody's ever heard of before.
VLESS was built specifically to get around that. On its own, VLESS carries no encryption at all, it's a lightweight transport protocol. Paired with something called Reality, it wraps your connection inside what looks, byte for byte, like an ordinary HTTPS visit to a real, popular website. A censor's inspection equipment sees what appears to be a routine encrypted connection to an unremarkable site, not a VPN.
Most Lux VPN customers never need VLESS, and that's fine, WireGuard and OpenVPN already handle privacy, streaming, and everyday security well. VLESS exists for one specific situation: you're connecting from somewhere that actively detects and blocks regular VPN traffic at the network level, not just where VPNs are technically against the rules, but where the infrastructure itself is built to find and kill VPN connections in real time.
This is most relevant in countries known for sophisticated, protocol-level VPN blocking, China's Great Firewall is the most advanced example in the world and the direct reason VLESS and Reality were developed in the first place, along with Iran and increasingly Russia, where blocking has escalated significantly in recent years. This isn't a one-click feature. Our main Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android apps don't have VLESS built in. Using it means installing a separate, purpose-built client and importing a configuration we generate for you.
